Sit upright. Don't slouch. Fix your posture.

These are all things that you might imagine hearing from a well-meaning grandparent or elderly figure in your life as a child. And it might have been followed with you rolling your eyes.

Paying attention to that kind of age old advice, not to slouch isn't just something that would make grandma proud... your posture is actually something that can change how you feel physically and emotionally.

In addition to helping you to avoid tension and discomfort in your physical body, researchers now know that our posture might also be able to affect our mood and mental health.

Sitting upright, for example, has been suggested to help with self-esteem and building resilience to stress.

Paying attention to our posture and making slight adjustments to how we hold our bodies can be a form of self care.

It can be a way to tune in and show ourselves some love.

I invite you to take a moment right now to pay attention to your body. How are you holding yourself? Whether you are seated, standing or walking does your body feel supported, strong and relaxed? Or does it feel tense and constricted?

Now that you've brought some awareness to the present state of your body and your posture ask yourself what is one small adjustment I can make right now to my posture to feel just a little bit better.

You might choose to release your shoulders, to relax your jaw, you may choose to open your chest and stand a little bit taller.

Whatever it is simply think about what you can do right now. In even a very small way to feel more grounded, empowered, relaxed, alert, supported... move your body and notice how your mood changes.

I hope that this minor adjustment to your posture today can help you feel a little bit better as we go about our business.

During the day, when you feel yourself, feeling a little down, a little low on energy, take a deep breath and notice your posture and notice what adjustments you can make to feel better.

It's simple but powerful.
